Fluoroscopy includes examinations such as barium studies renal studies, (eg MCU), hysterosalpingograms, sialograms, & dacrocystograms .
Fluoroscopy equipment allows the Radiologist to view the area as a dynamic study. Examinations are recorded on film, CD and /or video .
A limitation of xray examination is that most of the soft tissue structures of the body are of similar radiographic density. In order to visualise these various soft tissue structures, contrast agents are used to demonstrate some body areas (eg barium in a barium meal, Iodine based contrast for renal studies).
Barium sulphate is used for studies of the stomach, small and large bowel. Barium is not absorbed and is harmless although can result in some patients becoming constipated. To reduce this we suggest patients drink more water over the 2-3 days following a barium study.
Interventional procedures
Using fluoroscopy and ultrasound techniques, radiologists are able to perform a range of procedures under local anaesthesia. And thus reduce the need for more invasive or surgical procedures.
Xray, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound or CT Scanning may be utilised to guide interventional procedures.
