Small Parts Ultrasound - Scrotum, Thyroid

Ultrasound of the thyroid is performed to:

  • Evaluate palpable masses within or adjacent to the thyroid. The scan can usually distinguish between solid and cystic structures.
  • Determine whether the thyroid gland is enlarged or has a diffuse abnormality. A thyroid ultrasound may also be used to monitor the size and vascular perfusion of the thyroid gland during treatment. Abnormal parathyroid glands may be enlarged and detectable by ultrasound.
  • Ultrasound guided thyroid biopsy or fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) may be recommended by a Radiologist eg following detection of a suspicious nodule at diagnostic ultrasound. FNAB may be requested by an Endocrinologist or a Surgical Specialist following clinical assessment of thyroid disease.

Scrotal ultrasound is performed to:

  • Evaluate a mass or pain in the testes.
  • Identify and monitor infection or inflammation of the testes or epididymis
  • Query testicular torsion.
  • Monitor for recurrence of testicular cancer.
  • Localise an undescended testis.
  • Evaluate an injury to the genital area.
